چکیده

Abstract Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae; red imported fire ant) is an invasive species in several parts of the world. A major contributor to spread S. infested shipping containers. The vapor allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a naturally occurring organosulfur compound, highly toxic ; however, AITC volatile. Microencapsulation polyethylene (PE) resin slows release AITC, making it potentially useful material for preventing infestations. Here, we examined efficacy microencapsulated PE (mAITC) as repellent against infestation cardboard boxes, common containerized cargo. Using baited found that number individuals entering boxes containing mAITC sheet was significantly less than without sheet. When cover, which often used protect carboard during shipping, used, concentrations inside were increased and reduced almost zero. These findings indicate sheeting, especially combination with promising protection cardboard-box cargo infestation.

Microencapsulated Bait: Does It Work With Red Imported Fire Ants, Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)?

The preference of red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, for microencapsulated (MC) pyriproxifen based corn grit baits (P-bait) was conducted in laboratory and field conditions. A positive correlation between the microencapsulation rate and water tolerance ability of P-bait was observed. A 20% increment of water tolerance ability of P-baits was observed when P-baits were microencapsulated ...

Oviposition Process of Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Queens

The oviposition process of the red imported Þre ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is described as a succession of four events forming one egg-laying cycle. Each time an egg is laid, the vulva opens and the sting is fully extended. When the vulva closes, the egg is forced to the base of the sting, whereupon the sting is usually retracted across the egg. This phenomenon has...

Prevalence of Solenopsis Invicta (hymenoptera: Formicidae) Venom Allergic Reactions in Mainland China

To evaluate the damage and epidemiologic features of immediate allergic reactions to Solenopsis invicta stings in mainland China, a literature survey, and an internet search were done to obtain data; which were statistically analyzed. This pest became established in mainland China in 2004. We found that the most important reason for the high frequency of stings of people by the red imported fir...

Detection of Thelohania solenopsae (Microsporidia: Thelohaniidae) in Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) by multiplex PCR.

Oligonucleotide primer pairs were designed to unique areas of the small subunit (16S) rRNA gene of Thelohania solenopsae and a region of the Gp-9 gene of Solenopsis invicta. Multiplex PCR resulted in sensitive and specific detection of T. solenopsae infection of S. invicta. The T. solenopsae-specific primer pair only amplified DNA from T. solenopsae and T. solenopsae-infected S. invicta. This p...
